What We Wish We Knew Then: A Backward and Forward Look at Learning and Teaching in Law School

Abstract
In this paper, the authors journey back into their own experiences of being students in law school, hoping to illuminate how their past has shaped their thinking about the law school experience for current students. The authors were panel members for an orientation session for law students titled ‘‘What I Wish I Knew When I Started Law School.” After giving their remarks, they had continual dialogues about the themes that each of them had touched, which resulted in this paper. The paper is a product of a unique methodological combination: self-study, autobiographical reflection, and dialogic inquiry. Some themes and questions explored include what is law, what is the purpose of law school, what are appropriate ways of motivating students, how are relationships fostered in law school and why should they be and teaching with empathy and student-centeredness.
Dans cet article, les auteurs reviennent sur leurs propres experiences d’étudiants à la faculté de droit, dans l’espoir d’éclairer la fac, on dont leur passé a façonné leur réflexion sur l’expérience de la faculté de droit pour les étudiants actuels. Les auteurs ont participé à une séance d’orientation pour les étudiants en droit intitulée « Ce que j’aurais aimé savoir quand j’ai commencé la faculté de droit ». Après avoir donné leurs remarques, ils ont eu des dialogues continus sur les thèmes que chacun d’eux avait abordés, ce qui a abouti à cet article. L’article est le produit d’une combinaison méthodologique unique : auto-étude, réflexion autobiographique et enquête dialogique. Certains thèmes et questions explorés comprennent ce qu’est le droit, quel est le but de la faculté de droit, quels sont les moyens appropriés de motiver les étudiants, comment les relations sont-elles encouragées à la faculté de droit et pourquoi devraient-elles l’être et enseigner avec empathie et être centré sur l’étudiant.
